Mission Jamaica (MJ) is a short-term “vacation with a purpose” mission experience, which began at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN in 1990.
It combines a service project with time for reflection and spiritual rest. It allows a person to experience an international mission field that is close to home, yet far enough away to immerse into another culture for a week.
We invest ourselves in two main areas/cities in Jamaica:
–Montego Bay Area–
West Haven Children’s Home,J’Abode (Formerly Habitat), Copse Basic School, Garland Hall Orphanage, Riverside Basic School and Medical clinics at St. John’s, Sunset Beach, and Copse.
Hope Valley Experimental School, Penwood Medical clinic, Calaloo Mews Basic School, J’Abode projects

(formerly Mission Jamaica)
Prince of Peace for the last 12 years has joined St. Andrews Lutheran Church’s Mission Jamaica program. Beginning in 2016 POP will join Mission Jamaica for our first week and continue with our own program in our second and third weeks. While we have enjoyed our years with Mission Jamaica, the last couple years we have started working with new partners and communities in Jamaica and have made the decision to be responsible for our entire program. Prince of Peace also started a Sewing Clinic in Jamaica 4 years ago which is held every September. We are looking forward to new adventures and opportunities to serve with our brothers and sisters in Jamaica. We will continue to need the support and prayers from our families and friends at home.
In 2015, 16 people from Prince of Peace served at West Haven Children’s Home for the physically/mentally challenged children and young adults. In week 2 we worked with the community at Burnt Savannah-Bamboo to finish the roof, deck and painting on the converted shipping container for additional space needed for Vision Chapel. We were also able to do some much needed maintenance at Faith Chapel.
Hearts and Hands for Jamaica 2016
Prince of Peace is planning on attending three weeks in 2016 which gives everyone an opportunity to attend one, two or three weeks.
February 27 – March 5, 2016 – West Haven Children’s Home
This week we will be spending our time with 80+ children and young adults – playing, singing, feeding, etc. We are planning a trip to the beach with about 30 of the children. Last year MJ finished the renovation of Cottage 2. This year we will begin renovation on one of the other cottages.
March 5 – 12, 2016 – Faith Chapel
This week we would like to spend time with the community at Faith Chapel. Our plan would be to continue to do ongoing maintenance projects and paint the outside of Faith Chapel especially where it hasn’t been painted before.
March 12 – 19, 2016 – Vision Chapel
This week we would like to spend time with the community at Burnt Savannah-Bamboo and members of Vision Chapel. We would like to put another coat of paint on the church and do some maintenance and repairs.
FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY… Support the trip. Buy some lefse!
**We are currently holding airline seats, so if you are interested in joining us in 2016, please let us know.
