Keep Calm & Carry On
(Click the time above for that service)
It’s not difficult to feel threatened these days. We are constantly surrounded by voices telling us what things we need to be afraid of next. Why do we give our fears so much time and energy?
Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus receiving a threat against his life. It’s not perceived, but real. And Jesus doesn’t respond in fear.
Fear makes us strike first, hurt others, build walls, and turn inward. But Jesus doesn’t do any of those things.
Jesus continues to heal and preach and teach. In the face of a real threat, Jesus chooses to remain confident in who God has declared him to be. Jesus knows that the threat he has received doesn’t change anything about who he is.
And because of this, he can keep calm and carry on in the face of real fear.
And this is what Jesus wants for us.
He says that he has longed to draw us in and protect us, like a mother hen protects her chicks. This isn’t just a pretty little image for us to keep in our minds, but it’s real. This is what God has done for us, is doing for you right now.
We, like Jesus, have been claimed and named beloved children of God. No threat, no amount of fear can change that.
The grace of God covers us, saves us, protects us.
So then we too can keep calm and carry on.
Questions to Ponder or Discuss
1. What things are you afraid of right now? What threats are you currently facing?
2. What is a phrase that helps you when you’re afraid or facing difficulty?
3. What can you do to remind yourself that you are covered by the love and grace of God during times where you feel threatened and afraid?
This is one of the hardest and yet most important things we can do as followers of Christ … Live.
And not just live, but live confidently knowing that we are covered by the grace of God.
What might it look like for you to live this way, even facing all the things that threaten you and your well-being?
